New

Andrew Bailey
New I have always been amazed at how many good and pleasant things are associated with the spring. If you asked a hundred people what their favorite season of the year was I would bet that only a handful of them would answer spring. The summer is fun- you get to go swimming and take vacation and go on picnics and a host of other pleasant experiences. The winter offers the adventure of sledding and the beauty of snow and the excitement of Christmas. And Fall is the best season of all- the weather is perfect and all around you are beautiful ...

Too Many Blankets

Andrew Bailey
Too Many Blankets When Elijah gets older I will have to deny ever having told you this story, so enjoy it while you can. On Elijah’s bed are 11 blankets (at least that is all that I could remember off the top of my head) and he loves them all and calls each one by name- blue blanket, green, puppy blanket,Spiderman blankey etc. And when I put him to bed he wants at least four of those blankets on him, if not all of them. He even has a specific order in which he wants them and there is a correct up and down side of each blanket. The only real ...

Resolution

Andrew Bailey
Resolution The New Year is upon us again! Welcome to 2013. Have you made your New Year’s resolution yet? If not, let me share mine with you, like every year I try to take a resolution from the Bible. This year it comes from Luke16:1-13. It is the story of a man known only to us as the “Unjust Steward.” The story opens when the unjust steward is called before his master to be notified that he is being fired. The master accuses him of mismanaging his property and so he is to be let go after a few days to set his affairs in order. The unjust ...

Angel Tree

Andrew Bailey
In lieu of a regular blog article this week I wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of those who donated for our Angel Tree this year. Delivering those presents has become one of my favorite events each year. It is so encouraging to see the faces of children light up when you car ry in a big arm load of presents! This year we also handed out supplies from the food pantry and some paper goods that were specifically donated for the Angel Tree. We had 6 families and I was amazed at how much was brought in for them. I took the back seat ...

Keep Christ in Christmas (and other places too!)

Andrew Bailey
Christ in Christmas (And other places too) In the first chapter of Colossians, Paul preaches a message that I think would be well received around Christmas time. He talks about how Christ is better than anything. In Colossians he mentions thrones and rulers and heavenly realms. But for our purposes I think it would work just as well to say that Christ is better than Santa Claus or Claymation Christmas specials or even presents under the tree. The point he was making was that there was nothing in the world worth being distracted by to the ...

False Advertising

Andrew Bailey
-How much water can a ten gallon hat hold? (6 Pints) -What business did Al Capone’s business cards list? (Used furniture dealer) -What country were fortune cookies invented in? (America, Charles Jung, 1918) -Yes or no- does a quarter have an equal chance of landing heads or tails up? (No, the ‘heads’ side weighs slightly more and so lands face down more often.) False advertising is defined as “Any advertising or promotion that misrepresents the nature, characteristics, qualities or geographic origins of goods, services or ...

Stewards of Mystery

Andrew Bailey
Stewards of Mystery I might be wrong, but I would be willing to bet that nobody who is reading this article would say that their favorite Bible verse is anywhere to be found in 1 Corinthians 4.The reason I would be willing to make that bet is that 1 Corinthians 4 is not a very upbeat kind of chapter. In fact, Paul is talking to the Corinthians Christians and he appears to be fairly disgusted with the antics of this church. The problem, in Paul’s view, is that the Corinthian Christians are much too proud of themselves. They’ve apparently ...

3 Strikes and you're out!

Andrew Bailey
Theologically speaking, this is such a full time of year for me. With the election right behind us my mind is filled with questions about how to interact with the world and the government in a way that honors God and secures the well being of my nation and my family. With Christmas looming in the near future I’m thinking about incarnation, prophecy, church history, the trinity, angels singing in the night sky, and everything else that comes with Christmas. I’m reading a really good book by Mark Driscoll and Gerry Breshears titled “Doctrine: ...

Love Wins

Andrew Bailey
This week I finished reading Rob Bell’s new book: Love Wins: A Book About Heaven, Hell, And the Fate of Every Person Who Ever Lived. It was an interesting read and I highly recommend it for anyone who feels like thinking really hard. Rob Bell has received mostly bad press from Christians because of this book. There was a fairly positive article on it in the New York Times titled “What if there’s no Hell?” which pretty muchly makes Rob’s initial argument. He wants to know how much of what we know about heaven and hell and the afterlife comes ...

Bricks and Mortar

Andrew Bailey
Today (5/9/2011) on CNN there is a story titled "Faith unshaken by tornado." The CNN reporter said that while searching for the perfect panoramic shot of the destruction casued by the Tornado in Tuscaloosa, Alabama his attention was drawn by the sound of organ music. Following the sound he found a church, battered but still standing amid the rubble and inside a small group of believers had gathered. You can watch the video interview at http://religion.blogs.cnn.com/2011/05/06/faith-unshaken-by-tornado/?hpt=Sbin the one statement from the ...
